5th International Conference on the History of Women and Gender in Mexico
Oaxaca, March 18-20, 2010

La Red de Estudios@s de la Historia de Mujeres y de Género en México (REDMUGEN), in conjunction with the Centro de Investigaciones y Estudios Superiores en Antropología Social y la Universidad Autónoma Benito Juárez de Oaxaca, is pleased to announce the Fifth Conference on the History of Gender and Women in Mexico in Oaxaca, March 18-20, 2010.  The prominent role of women in contemporary Mexico illuminates the need to recognize the constitutive role of women and the constructions and practices of gender and masculinity in the historical development of Mexico.  Within the context of the celebrations of the Bicentenario de la Independencia and the Centenario de la Revolución, the Conference provides a forum for new research on gender and women in these processes that have deeply shaped modern Mexico.

     The conference welcomes papers on the role of women and the construction and practices of gender and masculinity:

  • in war, in the constitution of citizenship and rights, religion and secularization, and other socio-political processes stemming from the Wars of Independence
  • in the wars of the Mexican Revolution and in the constitution of public power, political organizations, the public sphere, citizenship and the national imagination in the formation of the post-revolutionary state;
  • in the economic processes emanating from Independence and the Revolution: the role of women’s domestic and extra-domestic work; their integration into formal and informal markets;  changing notions of gender and the sexual division of labor; the role of gender and women in migration;
  • in educational, cultural and religious spaces, processes, institutions and media which have promoted change and persistence in the course of two revolutions
  • in recent decades in which gender relations and identities have experienced significant transformations noted in social movements, politics, the economy, and the incidence of violence.   As the conference will take place in Oaxaca,
    we particularly welcome presentations concerning gender and women in this important state.

     Colleagues wishing to participate must submit a one page cv and an abstract (not more than 400 words stating the problem, argument, contribution, and sources) to be forwarded to vcolohistomugen@gmail.com by June 1st, 2009. The participation of graduate students is welcomed.   Notification of acceptance will be sent by Sept. 1, 2009.   Papers will be due by February 15, 2010 and they will be precirculated on the Redmugen website.
